A Central Bank (also known as reserve bank or monetary authority) is responsible for its country's monetary policy. In a few cases a central bank may serve more than one country. The Central Bank of West African States (Banque Centrale des États de l’Afrique de l’Ouest, BCEAO), for example, is a central bank serving the eight west African countries which comprise the West African Economic and Monetary Union. In the United States, however, the Federal Reserve System has 12 member banks regulating monetary policy.
